We are the Connecticut Vinyl Record Collectors

* Next Meeting: Wednesday October 19th 2011 *
At 6:30, we will start our LIVE AUCTION with a pre-viewing.  That is we will have the "auctionees" put their stuff on display on the tables so other people can look at what you have for the auction. At 7:00 we'll begin the auction with me actioning as the auctioneer. After an item is auctioned, immediate payment will be required.  Our past auctions have been pretty rough and hard to follow, so hopefully this new way will be a little more organized and give our potential buyers some more time to pick out what they want and jump in early and often.

Sellers are limited to 5 items per person. We might be able to stay at the Annex all night, but we do need to stick to a time limit. The items may be any record, lot or set just let me know the minimum bid you're willing to set and a little information about the item and we're off.

Mark your calendars please, as next meetings for 2011 will be November 9 and December 21, January 18.

Please Remember to bring stuff for the AUCTION.

Good luck to everyone and we'll see you Wednesday Night October 19, 2011.

Presentation by Ivan Ulz from NYC came up to discuss children's records.

Ivan has record show airing tonight at 9PM.

www.yesterdayusa.com is an old time radio station playing Ivan's show.

Visit his site at www.treasureivan.com.

Ivan works in Greenwich Villiage as a musician singing to preschoolers. Ivan

learned by working in his parent's nursery school.

Ivan's hand-penned song "Firetruck" has thousands of hits on Youtube.

1940's through the 50's is argued by some as the Golden Age of children's records.

Ivan discussed famous children's record artists such as Frank Luther who made over 3000 records in his lifetime.

Ivan wrote a song sang by the Four Preps as a "tribute" to Haley Mills in 1964.

Ivan finally met Haley Mills 34 years later and was told it was the only song ever written about her.

The Four Preps later modified to the song to be tribute to the

Beatles, but they were later sued by the Beatles for lyics too close to "I Want to Hold Your Hand"

Ivan played records by Uncle Don and an uncredited song "Trip to the Zoo" featuring Pete Seeger.

Ivan showed the CD he recorded "Songs from the old school" that featured the Firetruck Song.

Announcements:

Fliers were distributed for the New Haven Record Riot at the Annex YMA club on April 3rd.

Club Treasurer Robb Warner setup an account for us in the name of the Connecticut Record Club.

A suggestion was made to add the website maintained by Ronn Webb to the meeting reports.
The website also shows up first when searching for "Connecticut Record Club" using an online search engine such as Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.

o Ronnie Webb also announced he had created a group on Facebook for the Connecticut Record Club.
Club members who have a Facebook account can view the page.

o Sam suggested a mission statement. I don't have any details on that mission statement,
I believe the idea of a mission statement was tabled for a future meeting discussion.

o We jumped right into our discussion topic "What Not to Pass up at a Tag Sale". Here's the highlights:

o Ronn Nagel discussed how to find rare 7" EPs in a large lot of records despite the seller advertising LPs and 78s only.

o Chaim presented what to look for regarding punk records.

o Cliff discussed mono versus stereo and rechanneled recordings and what to look for (despite leaving his notes ("and brain") behind).
He specifically noted Beatles albums that have both mono, stereo and rechanneled tracks on the same album!

o Mark noted there were 3 popular types of quadraphonic CD 4, SQ and QS. The Wikipedia page gives a detailed discussion on the technical differences between the types: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadraphonic

o Andy presented a discussion on Surf and Hot Rod music. Andy argued "Surfing with the Astronauts" is the best Surf album ever.
Andy also argued Surf music is defined by not having any vocals and Hot Rod music is typically characterized by including a saxophone.

o Sam presented classical music not to pass up like "Living Stereo" and "Shaded Dog" pressings from RCA and "Living Presence" stereo records from Mercury. Sam also showed rare London "Blueback" stereo records.

o Chaim donated records to be sold at the Record Riot and the proceeds are to benefit the club.

o The meeting concluded with an auction.

Next Meeting WEDNESDAY, April 20th at 6:30 PM at the Annex YMA (544 Woodward Ave, New Haven).

Notes from our 16th Meeting and some Record Show News

- of the Connecticut Record Club-

February 16, 2011, 6:30PM

We had a lot of firsts at our second meeting at the Annex YMA first official members, first auction and the announcement of our first local record show promotion! Mark M

Announcements:

First things, first dues were collected and members were registered! We have our first 14 members! Our official members received numbered membership cards. If you missed registering for membership, we will collect dues and register members at the next meeting!

The club proposed and accepted a student membership at a cost of $10, half the price of regular club dues.

The club discussed how to proceed with legal documentation as a for profit organization which may cost upwards of $300 to organize or a non profit which may cost upwards of $750 to organize. Each has their tax benefits and disadvantages. No determination was made at the meeting.

The mission of the club was debated a 3-prong mission was suggested preserving the format, educate and share the music and promote collecting and preservation.

The club announced Treasurer Robb Warner opened a checking account for the club.

The next goal of the club is to open a website to consolidate information and promote the club. Using Yahoo Groups, which is free but had pop up ads, or a personally-hosted website was discussed, but no decision was made. Brent volunteered to develop and host the website on her personal web server.

Future meetings will be on the 3rd Wednesday of the month until December unless there is a conflict with the Bocce Club at the Annex YMA.

The CT Record Club will be supporting the New Haven Record Riot at the Annex YMA on Sunday, April 3rd. A full table at the club was offered at the show to promote the club. Tables are available for $45 and members can split tables. Admission will be free for CT Record Club members! (Admission is normally $3)

Update: The New Haven Record Riot is going to be held Sunday, April 3rd at the Annex YMA from 8AM to 4PM. Regular admission is $3 and early admission, from 8AM to 9:30AM, is $10. For dealers, tables are $60. Contact John Bastone to reserve your table. These are the regular rates members get discounted tables at $45 and free admission even early admission!

A suggestion was made to donate records to the club to sell at shows as a way to raise funds.

Help is needed to advertise the April 3rd show. Paul Hevrin volunteered to use his car club to help print fliers. Sam will have filers made up for members to pass out and hand out 2 weeks before the show.

Update: Club members continue to help promote the New Haven Record Riot by getting in contact with local media: WELI, The Hartford Courant, The Shoreline Times, The Yale Daily News and the Hew Haven Register as well as the Quad Town Advisor. If you have a local paper that you would like to get an ad in for the record club. See Sam.

The club then held our first ever live auction! A total number of 61 items were auctioned for a total of $316 changing hands. $21 was donated to the club. Here are some pictures from the club auction:

The meeting concluded with the usual swap meet.

Next Meeting WEDNESDAY, March 16th at 6:30 PM at the Annex YMA (544 Woodward Ave, New Haven). This meeting will hold a live auction! Also: be ready to buy and sell swap meet to follow! For the auction each person auctioning will be limited to 5 records (so we can save some time).

The discussion topic will be "What Not to Pass Over at a Tag Sale" how to recognize valuable records in genres you are not familiar with. This will be a group discussion to be ready to participate! Write your discussion topic down on one page (so we can reproduce it later) and discuss with the group you will have up to 5 minutes! Let us know what to look for! Show and tell some records from our list as examples of what not to pass up.

If you have any additional changes, send them our Club Secretary, Mark Morehouse, at mvm916@yahoo.com before the meeting. Sam, Cliff and Mark

Notes from our 14th Meeting and some Record Show News

- of the Connecticut Record Collectors Club-

Meeting Minutes Thursday, December 7th, 2010 (Meeting #14)

From the December meetings of the as-yet-unnamed New Haven Record Collectors Club (see Announcements section), here's the report from our last meeting of 2010.

Pictures are forthcoming and we'll resend the report once the pictures are added.  Hope everyone has great new year! Mark M

This week we shared our favorite examples of Audiophile pressings.  Here's a recap:

Ronnie W shared copies of special limited edition audiophile records manufactured by arguably the most famous audiophile pressing company, Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs!  He shared copies of Frank Zappa's "Sheik Yer Bouti", The Rolling Stones' "Sticky Fingers" and The Cars' "Shake It Up."  The Cars is a recent pressing on 180 gram vinyl.

Chaim shared two unique pieces of audiophile pressings: A limited Direct-to-Disc album by Dave Brubek. The 1st Release by another highly regarded audiophile label, Nautilus, by Randy Sharp.

Chris shared unique pieces of Beatlemania "John Lennon For President" by David Peel, "The Hamburg Tapes" and another album featuring remastered music from The Beatles earliest days (sorry, I can't read my writing on the name).

Mark M shared new sealed albums demonstrating different areas of audiophile pressings reissued Jimi Hendrix music on 180 gram vinyl on "First Rays of the New Rising Sun", new music released on vinyl for the niche collector (and vinyl enthusiast) market in the form of Aerosmith's 2001 release "Jaded" and a new Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs pressing of The Allman Brothers Band's "Idlewild South" on 180 gram vinyl.

Sam shared a number of unique audiophile pieces beginning with an early Mobile Fidelity pressing, a disc of Diesel Locomotives from 1967 and a Lorinda Aliveda Direct-do-Disc pressing.  Sheffield labs produced an audiophile "rock" record that was created in the studio by studio musicians, with sophisticated engineering. It was called "The Best Rock Record Ever" by Harry Pierson, who has compiled a long list of great sounding LP's that encompass everything from classical to rock, jazz, folk, etc. See Harry "Super Sound" list via Google.

Sal returned with more reissue copies of the rare Rhythm and News Magazine for sale.

Announcements:

Sam took donations for PROMESAS a family charity that raises money humanitarian relief in Haiti $10 was raised to support an orphanage the charity supports.

A new location was discussed, the Annex YMA in New Haven, the location has a meeting space for up to 70 people, a Bar and a longer allowed meeting time.

UPDATE:  We have been approved to meet at the Annex YMA from 6:30 until "late" with bar food and drink available.  The Annex YMA is located at 544 Woodward Ave.

Directions to the Annex: from I-95 north, exit 50 (first exit after Q bridge), right at second light, which is Woodward Ave. Half-mile on right. From I-95 South, exit 51, go straight on Frontage road past Wendy's, Home Depot, and take left at Woodward Ave, which is then the 2nd light ( Forbes gas station on the corner). Again, half-mile on the right, plenty of parking).

Ronnie W had looked in to other possible meetings places in case the Annex YMA didn't work out, such as the Trumbull Library.  Since we'll be meeting at the Annex YMA, we'll table the additional research.

Chaim is looking into the next record show, possibly in New Haven

The Record Riot record show is returning to New Haven Sunday April 3, at the Annex. Finally! Spread the word!!! This also happens to be our new venue for meetings, which is great.  More details at the meeting. Club members will be getting free admission and discounts for having a table!

We will continue to raise money for PROMESAS, a small non-profit that does relief work in Haiti.

Finally, club name ballots were issued.  The results are inconclusive, but having no consensus is a consensus!

Here's what we got for club name votes:

Most of these names seem to be along the lines of "[blank] Record Collectors Club", so we may just try to find a consensus on how to fill in the [blank].

Next Meeting WEDNESDAY, January 5th at 6:30 PM at the Annex YMA (544 Woodward Ave, New Haven).  The topic will be Show & Tell: Colored and Shaped Vinyl, bring 3-5 pieces and a quick discussion.  Also: be ready to buy and sell, swap meet to follow!

If you have any additional changes, send them our Club Secretary, Mark Morehouse, at mvm916@yahoo.com before the meeting.

Notes from the 13th Meeting and some Record Show News

- of the New Haven Record Club-

Meeting Minutes Thursday, November 4th, 2010 (Meeting #13)

Wow ? another great meeting chaired by Cliff Morehouse this time, on CT music and groups. Cliff showed us some scarce records that included: Al Anderson, Wild Weeds, NRBQ, Tommy Dae, 8 to the Bar, - (and spoke about The Exit a coffeehouse in New Haven) ? continuing with Eyes, Fountainhead (on the Toad label), Jasper Wrath (psychedelic rock), Nova 1, Pulse (some relation to the infamous Trod Nossel recording studio), The Scratch Band (GE Smith, guitarist of Hall & Oates and Saturday Night Live Band) B. Willie Smith, Tirebiter, and the Wildweeds... quite a collection of Connecticut bred groups and sounds. Brent showed a special CBS promotional LP set that had the [printed] signature of Peter Goldmark on the cover. Who was Peter Goldmark? You should know! He was the CBS staff engineer who came up with the microgroove LP system of 33 1/3 rpm. I believe the technology was present as early as the 1930's, and I am not sure if he is credited with the engineering of it way back then, but it could be, as he was born in 1906, and was a brilliant inventor (you can thank him for color TV, among other things!). In any case, he made it practicable commercially for Columbia in the late 1940s, which led RCA to develop the 45 rpm disc in response, as you know. If there were an Olympics podium and medal ceremony for recorded sound, Edison would get the gold, Berliner would get the silver, and Goldmark would probably get the bronze, in my estimation. What do you think?

Ronnie also showed us and passed around some great CT records: Lost Generation (Hardcore, Bridgeport), Resonance, Presidential Targets, The Not Quite, Planet of the Apes (Recorded in Hartford), an REO Speedwagon recorded in Bridgeport, a Harry Chapin's LP Portrait Gallery also Recorded in in the same city, Rude Awakening, Teenage Suicide (45), Nirvana 's LP From the Muddy Banks of Wishkah, with a picture of a former Fairfield Record Store, "Secret Sounds" featuring a T-Shirt worn by Dave Grohl on the cover, The Doors ( Peace Frog song, which had something to do with the arrest of Jim Morrison in New Haven on December 9, 1967, for inciting a riot). I would have had to tape record this meeting to get all the rich details...

Sal then took us all to school with a brief education in the history of the Rhythm and Blues sound that has come from New Haven, and what a rich and wonderful history it is! In many African American neighborhoods in the city, records were sold in barber shops long before there were record stores, and commonly in furniture stores in many places. In fact, before there were any Record shows record collectors in this area used to meet at the Brass Rail in Wallingford to trade records (late 60s to early 70s, I think). I can't possibly condense the great story of R&B in New Haven here, but I refer you to the excellent article in the (now rare) copy of /Rhythm and News Magazine/, numbers 9-10, published in March 2001 by Bjorn Jentoft, formerly of Old Saybrook. Many thanks to Sal, who sold us copies of that rare publication at the club, and who will bring more, and other copies, to the next meeting ($10 a copy, special price for us ? these are rare and out of print). Every page was fascinating to me. It is largely the story of two guys from Wilbur Cross High School who started a recording company in New Haven in 1955, and who went on to record the most requested R&B/R&R ballad ever recorded (according to several major surveys), right here in New Haven (down the street from where I live!), which is In the Still of the Nite issued on the Standord label, matrix # 6106, with flip side The Jones Girl (B) at 78 rpm, March 1956. By the way, if Bjorn Jentoft is right, and I think he is, the info in Rockin Records is wrong. I'd bet on Bjorn. Sal told us many things that I can't remember, but if you want to know the details, buy the magazine, or try to find a copy of what I think is titled The New Haven Sound a 1977 self-published book by Paul Lepri, who covers the three decades from 1946 to 1976 in his (also now rare) book. Time would fail if I were to begin to tell of the wonders of the Scarlets, the Five Satins, the Nutmegs, the Shadows, the Starlarks, the Academics, Nicky and the Nobles, the Lovetones, Ruby Whittaker and the Chestnuts, and so many more groups. In a nutshell, we have an incredibly rich heritage right here in the Elm City, let alone in all of CT, and it falls to us, record collectors, to preserve it for posterity. Sal also gave us the lowdown on the huge biannual 78/45 show in Allentown, Pa., that according to him, is now considered the top show of all, better than the weeklong thing in Austin, TX. No dollar bins there, and some heavy-duty dealing in mega-rare records, with at least one $18,000 deal made on the spot, as witnessed by Sal, I believe. This is a premium show that we could organize a trip to.

Moving along, Robert showed some northern soul, I believe, by Ron Chris, Victor McNight, Dick Arnold, and The Galdenes. Paul had an unusual six inch 45 rpm on Big Shot, Jona Lennie ? (Sorry, I can't read my own handwriting). Someone spoke about a group called The Remains that opened for the Beatles in 1965. I spoke about a rare LP from New Haven by a group called Legend titled From the Fjords on Empire, 1979 (500 copies made and distributed locally and at a few concerts in CT, excellent early garage/epic rock). Keep your eye out for that one, a black and white cover, sort of Nordic warriors and landscape. The two founders met at ECA, an arts magnet school in New Haven. The music has a well-deserved high reputation.

Chaim gave us a report on another huge show, the 3-day WFMU extravaganza in New York City. Oddball religious, private press, and garage rock, among other genres, are still hot. The action starts out in the street, as dealers are waiting to load in, and goes on until 10 pm. Chaim also spoke about the Sittin , Starin and Rockin club in New Canaan, that put out a record label, or a record? And also showed a scarce Jeff Claypool disc, Me, Myself, and I.

* On a personal note: * Our sincere and heartfelt condolences to Jim Johnson, whose mother recently passed away. Our best wishes for successful surgery.

...and a speedy recovery to Ronn Nagel, who has also been unable to attend meetings recently. We miss you guys and look forward to seeing you again soon.

Next meeting coming up on Tuesday December 7th 2010 the first Tuesday of the month.

Audiophile records. Cliff and I think it would be good to limit it to 3 records each for show and tell, because we want to follow that with a bigger Buy and Sell Christmas Shopping time at this meeting. We can easily have a table or half-table each, and let's not do any dealing until after we do Show and Tell this time, to be fair to everyone. NOTE: Meetings will continue to be first Thursday of the month at Hagaman Library, 6:30 to 8 pm, EXCEPT April, which had to be moved to April 14 because of a conflict with the library schedule. We are looking for a different venue, and have two good possibilities, a room at the Annex YMA, or a church hall in New Haven. All suggestions and contacts welcome. We need a place that has lots of parking, easy load-in, and the possibility of being loud sometimes. Send your suggestions for a name for the club to our Club Secretary, Mark Morehouse, at mvm916@yahoo.com THIS MONTH. Cromwell Record Show this Sunday, Nov. 21, and see their site or our link at Ronnie's www.wingnuttoons.com for more show listings in this area. Pictures will follow in a separate email.

Meeting Minutes Thursday, October 7th, 2010 (Meeting #12)

Happy One Year Anniversary New Haven Record Collectors' Club!

(and Happy Birthday to our newly elected webmaster Ronn Webb!)

We started off the meeting with a show-and-tell of the spooky, the unusual and the just plan weird vinyl from our collections.  Here's some of the pieces we shared:

* Chaim: album of logging songs, one titled "How to improve your eyesight"

* Mark M: A shaped Aerosmith import and 10" Black Crowes single

* Jeff: A disc by CRU  that had a design matching his tattoo; a local CT guy on white vinyl, "The One Man Band Broke Up"

* Cliff: Spike Jones in Hi-Fi and in Stereo, Boris Karloff, and the Original Monster Mash

* Chris: A George Harrison radio interview and some music disc, with ads for Alpine; Paul McCartney fold-out cover of "Push the Button" on Parlophone;

and a Russian Paul McCartney album

* James: a picture disc 45, a Yogi Bear cereal box send away flexi, and a "Jack-in-the box"

* Mike O'Brien showed a huge Madonna repro disc used as a store display

* Sam: several "secret spiral" records: Chevrolet Sweepstakes; All-American handicap horse racing game; Bingo alled by Sandy Becker; a 78 rpm Changer-Aid record with different frequencies; a binaural Cook Labs "Voice of the Sea" and a Cook Labs "Out of this world" (ionosphere and earthquake recordings, with seismograph groove that makes the needle vibrate wildly and skip); and "Sounds of my City" by Tony Schwartz, with an early recording of Moondog.

To celebrate the one-year anniversary of the club, we enjoyed pizza to the sounds of Llans Thelwell and the Celestials (on WIRL records - West Indies Records Ltd.) then enjoyed three record-shaped cakes with custom labels and sang "Happy Birthday to us" way out of tune. One label said "first recorded chocolate" and "430 calorie-rpms"

To form a more perfect union, we held an election to determine the roles are committee will play in organizing and developing the club

Not to mention keeping the club in the groove for the foreseeable future.  Here's the results:

* President:  Sam Sigg

* Vice President:  Cliff Morehouse

* Secretary:  Mark Morehouse

* Treasurer:  Robert Warner

* Webmaster:  Ronn Webb

New business for the next meeting:

* Club Name

* After one year, we still don't have an official name we're informally the New Haven Record Collectors Club, for now.  We tried to take some name suggestions, but we ran out of time.  For the next meeting, we'll pass around a note pad and we can all make a suggestion.  We'll vote by e-mail to suggest the name of the club and announce it at December's meeting.

* Show-and-Tell!

* Everybody's favorite event, Show & Tell!  This meeting's theme is local Connecticut bands!

Next meeting coming up on Thursday November 4th 2010 the first Thursday of the month.

The next New Haven Record Club Meetings are scheduled for December 2nd 2010,

and for 2011 they will be on January 6th, February 3rd, March 3rd and April 7th
Notes from the 10th Meeting and some Record Show News

- of the New Haven Record Club-

Our Monthly Meeting took place on August 5th 2010.

Wow - where did Summer go? I was fortunate enough to have two mini-vacations this year, one in West Virginia and our usual camping in the beautiful Adirondacks for five days.

I hope you all got to get some fresh air and find some rare records.

In W. VA. I actually found time to hit a flea market and found some interesting vinyl lurking in dusty boxes. Don't miss the next "Show and Tell." I also spent some time reading about Thomas A. Edison, which was not only very informative, but also very enlightening, pun intended. Just think of it, without Edison we might still be reading by kerosene lamp, gaslight or candle, would we even have electrical service? and worst of all: there would probably be no records.

It was interesting to learn that Edison's popularity surged in 1877, when the phonograph was first invented and revealed to the public, and then again in 1888, when he brought out the improved phonograph. People were amazed by the light bulb and grateful for that fantastic invention, but they soon took it for granted, once cities were powered up and lit. However, they were truly awed by the phonograph, and many studies have indicated that Edison is best known and loved for that invention in particular, over all others there were over 1,000.

Imagine my surprise when way up in the middle of the Adirondacks, 6 million acres, year-round population 130,000, haven't checked the facts, but the Adirondack Park has to be more than half the size of CT, in Blue Mountain Lake, to be specific, I came across Thomas Edison Rd., so I had to take a picture!

Anyhow, at the last meeting, we had fun eating gourmet pizza and enjoyed another round of "Show and Tell," with plenty of musical samples provided by Riley, the youngest member of the club yet. He also had the most Super-Cool disco-era record player I have ever seen, that flashed colored lights when records played.

I counted nineteen people altogether, a new record, the puns just won't stop.  Thanks to Ronn the techno man, we have pictures that helped to remind me of some of the interesting records that people brought in. Chain showed a number of things, including a piece of tricolor wax. Rob Warner brought in some 16 rpm I believe, the whole Bible in a box. Cliff showed us a prize David Seville disc.

Ronn "The Detergent" showed us his gorgeous old Nitty Gritty unit, a vintage record cleaning machine. Ronn, you are now known as "The Detergent" for your memorable advice: "Don't clean records with just water! Water plus dirt equals what? Mud! Use a detergent to break up the dirt particles!" Those of us who bought Ronn's amazing Green Earth Peroxide cleaner now swear by it, by the way, as a primo record cleaning fluid.

Chris brought in a 45 and picture sleeve we all coveted, especially Sal, right ? the very rare Al King "Old Blue Ribbon" piece, also pictured below, I hope. Someone showed a nice Dylan "Blood on the Tracks" promo, and the original "Peanuts" disc with Kaye Ballard and Arthur Siegel. For pictures of all these wonderful records, I'm going to suggest you visit Ronn's Wingnuttoons site, because I'm having trouble formatting and inserting, as you see. Go there, and also see an Ed McMahon, a Little Rascals, a rare  Seeburg Muzak sort of office background white noise disc, and a gold flexi pocket disc, brought in by Lance.

Anyhow, it was a fun meeting, as usual.

Theme: HUMOR. Bring Show and Tell stuff that is FUNNY, and we might listen to some as well. There will also be a little Birthday celebration and cake, so don't miss it.

Next meeting coming up on Thursday September 2nd 2010 the first Thursday of the month.

The next New Haven Record Club Meetings are scheduled for October 7th, November 4th and December 2nd

and for 2011 they will be on January 6th, February 3rd, March 3rd
Notes from the 9th Meeting and some Record Show News

- of the New Haven Record Club-

We had another fun meeting on Thursday the 8th of July, with refreshments and another great Show and Tell session.

Cliff showed a rather large group of picture discs that included groups from the Beatles to the Stones and artists from Michael Jackson to Meatloaf.

---

Sal stunned us all with an extremely rare Beatles record, the very first EVER! That would be the orange label Polydor by Tony Sheridan and the Beat Brothers doing "My Bonnie" and "The Saints." OK, OK, maybe it's not the very first by the Beatles as they have come to be known, but the first as the group then known as the Beatles, backing up Tony Sheridan. They had Pete Best at the time, not Ringo yet, and it wasn't just them, although it seems like a few of the early Polydor discs might have just them without Sheridan. It's a bit too arcane for me, as they recorded seven tunes with and without Sheridan, for Polydor, in June of 1961. The earliest US release was on a black label Decca, then a pink label Decca, in 1962. A clean black label Decca sold for $15,000 in 2007, so keep sharp at those tag sales. Don't neglect those orange label German Polydors either! Also shown was a record that was a compilation of CT soul groups, a nice and scarce item.

Ronnie showed some very snazzy Vinyl Records, of his latest findings like Duran Duran's take on a tribute LP called "Thank You", Billy Idol's "Charmed Life", David Bowie's band Tin Machine featuring Soupy Sales' sons (Hunt and Tony Sales), also Eagles guitarist Don Felder solo LP called "Airborne" and a group called Girl featuring Phil Collen of Def Leppard and Phillip Lewis from L.A. Guns plus the "Classic YES" album that has the Bonus 7 inch single of "Roundabout" and "I've Seen All Good People", among others.

--

---

Chaim had been fortunate enough to buy a record collection from a former groupie, and showed some records we are unlikely to find at the thrift store: a still-sealed "Exile on Main Street," the first Christie McVie disc, and many, many more rock and punk rarities, from Public Image Limited to Syd Barrett...

...Number Nine...Number Nine...Number Nine...

The Nipper days of Summer are here, and it's prime tag sale/estate sale/flea market time. I haven't been getting out too much, but have nonetheless been lucky enough to find some very interesting and nice records.

Let's all bring some of our latest finds or some unusual Show and Tell records, and just have fun showing our favorite things.

We were privileged to have a very informative presentation at our last meeting, on sound system basics: types of turntables; P-mounts and cartridges; speaker cable varieties; speakers and ohms, and lots more. Mark and his Dad also showed some pretty unusual turntables in action, which I hope I can get a picture of below:

A beautiful and rare early DUAL model, on the right; a very rare linear tracking turntable, on the left, that plays BOTH sides of a record!!! Also, a programmable linear player that plays the tracks you select, some very fancy speaker cable, and lots more. I'm a lousy secretary, and I can't remember the specifics of the equipment very well at this point, but it was an excellent presentation, and Mark did it on the fly, having lost his whole Powerpoint presentation only a day before! Bravo, and many thanks to Mark, his Dad, and their helper, and to techno  Ronn, who took the pictures above with his cool iphone.

Here are a few of my latest finds. Thanks to a member of the club who tipped me off about a "basement full of 78's" I found the above Edison disc, one of only two Edison records on which the great American genius recorded his own voice. On this record it is a speech made after WWI, in 1919.

It pains me to think that this one and many other 78s would probably have gone into a dumpster if no-one cared about records. We do have a duty to preserve the recorded heritage of our culture, whether it's a rare doo-wop or soul record, or a rare speech, a unique recording made by a G.I. in Europe during WWII who is greeting the family back home, or even a mundane home recording labeled "Office Party, Christmas 1948" (one of my favorites !). Record collecting continues to be one of the greatest hobbies on the planet. It's one of the few hobbies that allow a form of "live" time travel.

Please write John, and ask him to bring the "Record Riot" show back to New Haven! It was a very good show last year, held at the Annex in New Haven, but he needs to hear from us, and to know that we will help spread the word if he does it again.

Agenda for the June 3rd Meeting and Record Show News

- of the New Haven Record Club-

Hooray! This is Our EIGHTH Meeting!

It was a good time of Show and Tell, and we saw, and got to examine closely, some very fine and rare records. Once again, we all learned a little bit more about what not to overlook at those Tag sales, and heard some stories about those great rare finds. Some guys brought very rare oldies, some guys brought very cool brand new vinyl. It was all interesting and entertaining, and thanks to Mr. O'Brian and Chaim for bringing refreshments &endash; all the way from New York State!

The buying and selling was very active, and continues to be a very good reason to come to the meetings. By the way, please feel free to forward your special requests to me, and I'll send them out to all. Right now, a friend of mine is looking for some Scott Walker records, and/or Walker Brothers. I have none, but if anyone has some for sale, please bring them. I'm also always looking for stuff on the COOK Labs label. Dig out those old 45's, there are some sharpshootin' buyers.

Everything seems to be selling, from 45 picture sleeves to LP's and 78's, so keep the variety coming.

Next meeting: Presentation by Mark on

Followed by the usual buying and selling.

It came to my attention today that someone (not Doug the owner) didn't see the humor in the April Fools joke about Replay closing and selling all the remaining records for $1. One of our members (who will remain unnamed) actually dropped everything, not having read to the bottom of the text, and raced up there! Another member almost did before he got it. In any case, let me make an apology here to the comically-challenged, and re-iterate what I think is pretty obvious: seeing REPLAY RECORDS close would be the LAST thing any of us would want! We were very sad to see Gee's bite the dust, but wish him well on the Record Show circuit.

Not only is Replay the best store around New Haven, it is also the only store that just sells vintage records. If you want CD's, T-Shirts and incense as well, you know where to go (no offense to Cutler's, also a fine store, or anyone else). I encourage everyone in the club to support these stores and Redscroll, and all the others, and I know that many of you do!

Just to make up for any slowdown in business that may have occurred because of my little joke (I actually hoped the opposite would happen!), let me do a little free advertising here:

REPLAY RECORDS is at 2586 Whitney Ave., Hamden CT. Their phone number is 203-934-9999, and their hours are M, T, TH, F 11-6; closed Wednesdays, SAT 11-5, Sun 12-5.

Support them.

I have not heard how the Westchester or Danbury shows were, so if you have news, let me know.

The next show I know of is a bit of a hike, but is a new venue. It will be in Jersey City, which is right across from Manhattan near the Holland Tunnel, on Sat. June 5, 10am-5 pm.

For other shows around NY, NJ, PA and Long Island, see www.showsandexpos.com and also check with  johnbastone@optonline.net .

Agenda for May 13th Meeting and Record Show News

- of the New Haven Record Club-

First of all, welcome to the six new folks who signed up at the Cromwell show.

If you want to catch up on all we've been doing, go to Ronn's website, www.wingnuttoons.com and follow the link.

Hope to see you at the next meeting,

THURSDAY, MAY 13. Hagaman Memorial Library, East Haven, 6:30-8 pm.

What's that line from Steinbeck?

"The best laid plans of mice and men often go astray"

For the time being, we will still go on without officers, as the election did not take place. Maybe next time. Or, it might be best to simply issue a call here and now for volunteers to be on a "steering committee." A number of people in the club have offered to do that already, so we had might as well go that route. We can discuss the how and why a little at the next meeting, which is coming right up, or just send me your suggestions, and I'll group them and present them at a future meeting.

We probably all have somewhat different ideas of what a record club should be like, and there is no ideal club.

My vision is to part of a group that knows a lot about, and loves, records &endash; and almost everything about them.

I think it would be fantastic if our little club grew in stature over the months and years, to become a group known for expertise, generosity and fun. There are already some very knowledgeable people in our club, both formally and informally &endash; as well as some generous and very fun folks. There are a number of world-class experts on various aspects of collecting records in Connecticut, and they could be drawn into our group as well. There are some collections and collectors of legendary status in Connecticut, even legendary dealers.

Anyhow, we had a fun time trading, buying and selling, and the shop talk was great.

Where else can you get great deals, meet other record nuts and get outstanding advice, appraisals, tips, news, and expertise, all for free?! Where else are you going to get a Willie Mabon 78 on Chess for $2, or minty Beach Boys singles for a buck? Yeah, I know tag sales. But on a regular basis? At the club.

Since the next meeting comes up so quickly, we will have another "SHOW AND TELL," and then the usual buy/sell/trade.

The ground rules:  Bring 3 to 5 records that are prize possessions. Show them, even pass them around, preferably in a plastic sleeve, and tell us why these are rare, unusual, bizarre, etc. We'll try to keep it to about five minutes per person, so be prepared, and be succinct. By the way, you can bring food and drink to the community room, so if anyone wants to bring stuff for all, that is fine, and it's also OK to eat supper if you haven't had time.

Upcoming Record Shows:

The Westchester RECORD RIOT!, in New Rochelle, New York is on Sunday, May 23rd.

My That is an Interesting Groove!

It's been a long stretch without a meeting, but the club is very much alive.

I hope the meeting schedule will even out and stabilize after this June, as the next meeting after this one will be in only 2 weeks, on May 13.

After June, it's every 1st Thursday of the month, unless otherwise noted.

For this Wednesday the 28th of April meeting:

- We will start at 6:30 sharp with a 5 minute election. We will nominate and elect a President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. We can and will do this in five minutes!

Anyone present can nominate someone, or nominate themselves to serve the club for one year. There are things to do, and working as a small team will help. There are some great field trip ideas, and we need to work on things like getting the Record Riot back to New Haven, getting discounts to the shows, better networking, smaller specialized interest groups, help with identifying bootlegs, sharing resources like old record company catalogs for research, and much, much more. From all that I hear, interest in records and collecting them is on the rise, as is manufacture of turntables, pressing of new vinyl, etc.

 - No presentation this time, just a short election and then BUY/SELL/TRADE for the rest of the time, so bring your piles of records. There are plenty of tables.

If you come early, just ask the librarian or janitor for the key to the room, and set up a table.

- There is a chance that the radio report made by our visitor from Boston last month will make it to NPR, so stay tuned.

Upcoming Record Shows:

Sunday May 2

THE CROMWELL RECORD RIOT! is just 5 days away.  It will be at The Crowne Plaza in Cromwell this Sunday, May 2nd.  The room will be, once again, jammed with LP's, 45's, CD's, DVD's, T-Shirts, and lots more.  Show hours are 9:30 AM til 3:30 PM.  Admission is $3.  Early admission is available from 8 AM til 9:30 AM and is only $10.

And also be aware that are new show, The Westchester RECORD RIOT!, in New Rochelle, New York is only 3 weeks away on Sunday, May 23rd.  If you'd like to be on the mailing list for this show, please respond to this email and let me know.

$1 off regular admission is available with a print out of this email.

I'll be there with LOTS of new stuff, so will many other dealers.

May 16 CT, Danbury. Record & CD Convention. Holiday Inn, Exit 8 off I-84. SH:10am-5pm. A: $4. F: $50. Trash American Style, PH: 203- 426-0306.

Addendum and Update to the 6th meeting report:

- of the New Haven Record Club held on Thursday March 11, 2010 -

Happy Spring To All You Vinyl Lovers!

We had another excellent presentation on March 11, about the great CHESS label and the amazing artists that they recorded for.

Many thanks to Cliff and Mark Morehouse for the excellent presentation.

I'd have a lot more to say, but I have lost the notes that I was trying to take.

It was thorough, very well documented, and went into great detail without being boring. Classy, well done.

- For More Information on Cliff and Mark Morehouse Very Well Informed Documentary on CHESS Records click pictures Below -

We also welcomed Lauren Hansen, who came all the way from Boston to report on our little group and

to do a few interviews for an upcoming radio show.

We were sad to see another record store bite the dust, as Gee's Records in Stratford had to close.

You can be sure that somewhere in CT however, another record store has opened.

Interest in vinyl and shellac is not decreasing. To the contrary,

I find more and more coverage of the many benefits records bring to their owners when compared to

CD's, ipods, downloads, etc., in the press, and in person.

Yes, I know, CD's are records too, but, you know

It's a long stretch between meetings this time, as the next meeting will be

WEDNESDAY April 28, 2010.

FOR YOUR CALENDARS:  Next meeting after April is May 13.

From then until December,(with the exception of July), all meetings will be on the FIRST THURSDAY OF THE MONTH.

I decided not to do that in July, as the holiday weekend would probably be a conflict for many of us.

The dates then, are: June 3, July 8, August 5, Sept. 2, Oct. 7, Nov. 4, Dec. 2.

The library community room is booked for us for all those dates.

GEE's JUST BEFORE THE FREE RECORDS THING

GEE'S ABOUT 3 HOURS LATER

If you missed the fun at Gee's "Free Records" day, this will give you an idea.

It WAS fun, and we all found some cool records. THANKS, GARY!

Best wishes for the future, and we hope to see you at the record shows.

OK, now who went back that night to do some dumpster diving?

I wish I had been able to, I confess.

I tried to make a little announcement about the club during the mayhem, but I don't think too many people were listening.

The next somewhat local record show I know of is in Danbury on May 16. More info next time.

Lastly,

The presentation I was hoping to get for this next meeting has not worked out, so there is nothing planned in that regard.

I'm taking suggestions at this point or we could simply all bring lots of records and

Do a big BUY, SELL,TRADE session for a change, as we never seem to have enough time for that.

The records are out there! I found some CLEAN Elvis 78's recently RCA, not SUN,

but still Clean and unplayed, Also I discovered some new folks on the CHESS and VEEJAY labels.

I heard from Malcolm Tent that there is a DJ thing going on in New York somewhere where the

DJ's only spin 78's " What a cool idea " I hope to do it sometime.

Reminder:

* Next meeting of the New Haven Record Club is

Wednesday, April 28th 2010, same time and place.

6:30 to 8 pm, - Hagaman Memorial Library, 227 Main St., East Haven;

For your calendars, all meetings will be on the FIRST THURSDAY OF THE MONTH

Reservations are for the Community Room for May 13

June 3, July 8, August 5, Sept. 2, Oct. 7, Nov. 4, Dec. 2.
